1st Year Trade Apprentice Case Study

Name: Marc Morrison
Age: 18
From: Glasgow
Apprenticeship Programme: Bricklayer
College: Reid Kerr Paisley College

Marc Morrison is 18 years of age and is in his first year as an apprentice bricklayer. He is studying at Reid Kerr, Paisley College while undertaking his 4-year apprenticeship and he says that it’s been an enjoyable experience so far, even though you’re trying to get into a routine: “My days go in fast and it is very hands on, which can be expected being a brickie but I have never had a job like that. I obviously also like getting paid – that has its advantages!”

Now into a routine and gaining his own independence, his role as a bricklayer is becoming more and more hands on in comparison to previous jobs he has worked in: “I am mainly involved I trench blocking and bricklaying but bricklaying is a lot more enjoyable – it can get pretty mucky in the trenches.”

Marc secured his apprenticeship after successfully completing a work placement which he undertook at Newfield Sq, a 178-home development constructed on behalf of Sanctuary Group. He has been based on several other jobs across Glasgow – something which he finds interesting: “I find it interesting working between different jobs; you get to meet lots of people and the guys I have worked with have been great. There are challenges sometimes like working on your own but so long as you listen you end up figuring things out.”

As he moves into his second year of his apprenticeship, what Jack looks forward to the most is expanding his learning and being involved with bigger projects. His advice, though, is simple: “show up on time and that they try their best, it’s all you can do!”
