Name: Jonathon Renfrew
Training Programme: Trainee Health & Safety Advisor
College: City of Glasgow College
I started with CCG in March 2018, I was put out on-site as an assistant site manager to help gain further knowledge and understanding of how site management operates on a day to day basis. I was based at Moorfoot Primary School (Inverclyde Council) and then an affordable housing development called Burnmouth Road (Wheatley Group) and it was during this time I was made aware of the H&S role. I had a chat with various people about my career path and what role CCG thought would fit me best; I started the programme in August 2018 and have just finished the first of my three-year programme.
I decided to apply to work within the H&S department because I felt I could give something to the team and also that it would suit my character and that it would also help in progressing and advancing my knowledge about construction and the importance of H&S within the building environment. Since joining the team it has been a great move and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time within this last year.
I learn more by doing and seeing something being done rather than trying to learn it out of a book. Being in this role has helped me massively at becoming more confident within my position as trainee H&S advisor. The H&S team have been fantastic…
For graduates, I would advise that they should take as much in as you can and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is a good department to work in and is very well structured for a trainee to work within. I have always been made aware of where I am working towards and what I am expected to be achieved, I have always been fully supported within the team and from my manager which has helped massively.
The thing I enjoy the most is the variety of jobs and different projects I get to see, also dealing with a variety of different site managers and site teams you get to meet on a week to week basis. I enjoy being busy and getting involved as much as I can.
