TRAINEE TIMBER FRAME DESIGNER CASE STUDY

Name: Michael Leonard
Age: 25
From: Glasgow
Training Programme: Trainee Timber Frame Designer
University: Edinburgh Napier

Before starting with CCG OSM, I was studying various courses within the Built Environment which has been a key interest of mine for many years. I found out about the role from my college lecturer and as soon as I read about the position, I knew it was my dream job. I have always been interested in the innovative practices associated with offsite manufacturing so to be part of such a big company in the CCG Group is incredibly exciting.

Day-to-day, I am putting theory into practice by visiting projects and learning more about the OSM factory environment. Each project has its unique stamp so it is interesting to understand the flexibility of the ‘iQ’ Timber System across various types of environments and scenarios in construction. This is invaluable when trying to understand offsite methods of building.

I am fortunate to be in my role with CCG OSM. I have always been interested in buildings – the planning involved, the principles behind architecture and construction itself. So, when understanding more about timber frame design and the importance it has to those factors, I knew that this met my career goals and aspirations.

The OSM team are great to work with. Our office, whilst small, is big with experience and knowledge. As a trainee, the comfort I get from having such experienced staff on hand to answer any questions I may have is hugely important to my development.  I was instantly made to feel welcome.

Construction has so many different strands to it. You may not be sure of what career path to take but I would highly recommend people research the different – possibly not as well known –  roles available as I think they would be surprised at how many options there are.
