TRAINEE TIMBER FRAME DESIGNER CASE STUDY

Name: Jordan McGinley
Age: 22
From: Glasgow
Training Programme: Trainee Timber Frame Designer
College: Glasgow Clyde College

From September 2017 to June 2019, I studied HND Visual Communication/ Illustration as I have always had a passion for creating and design. I decided to turn my hobby into a career and whilst it was enjoyable, I could feel myself drifting from the course and decided to work in the construction industry. One of my proudest achievements was being based on the Prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier as an HVAC engineer.

The role with CCG OSM appealed to me in such a way that I thought I could have the perfect balance between the creative aspect of my skill set and my experience gained in construction and engineering. CCG OSM, being part of the CCG Group, also gave me comfort in that they are a well-established company. I could see a clear path ahead of me and I was thrilled when I secured the role.

My day-to-day role in CCG OSM is underpinned by my training programme in Timber Frame Design. I am gaining familiarity with components and the make-up of the ‘iQ’ Timber System and I am involved in the creation of floorplans for a wide variety of projects. I also spend lots of time on the factory floor and the site environment to further improve my knowledge about the overall ‘offsite’ process and the integration with CCG’s Construction division.

I only commenced the training programme this year so everything is still very fresh. As in-depth as the programme is, I am eager to learn more and I am very much enjoying my experience. The OSM team are also a great bunch of people. The close-knit environment of the OSM office is very helpful to my development as they are always on hand if I have any questions.

I couldn’t recommend a trainee programme enough. Timber frame design is quite a specialist subject but it is also very interesting and I would urge anyone who has an eye for creativity or design to consider this as a field of study.
