THE former Holmlea Primary School, transformed into a stunning development of mixed-tenure homes, has been shortlisted for a national award.
The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence 2021 are the most established and respected awards in the UK planning industry. Running for over 40 years, they celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society.
Holmlea was handed over to Home Group and Cathcart & District Housing Association in 2020 and comprises the conversion of the former, Grade B-Listed school building and janitor’s house as well as the new build construction of one and two-bedroom flats, delivering a total of 49 homes in a mix of social and mid-market rent.
Designed by Anderson Bell Christie, the development was submitted to the RTPI Awards Excellence in Planning to Deliver Homes – Small Schemes (up to 50 homes) Category by Glasgow City Council with the winners being announced via a digital ceremony on Thursday 29th of April 2021.
Speaking last year, Hugh Burrows (pictured), a former pupil of the school, was very pleased with the outcome of the building and his new property.
He said: “My aunt lived in the area when I was growing up and I used to play with the local kids, many of them went to Holmlea Primary School. I moved back into the area six years ago and I’m thrilled to be moving into a home within the old school building. It holds so much history and I’m delighted to be a part of it I’ve been told my living room was once the headmaster’s office so that’s pretty fun.”
Another resident, Hollie Osbourne (pictured), moved into Holmlea alongside her mum and she was thrilled with her new home.
She said: “The flats are exceptional! Sometimes I can’t believe this is where I live. I grew up in the area and went to Holmlea nursery and I’ve watched this school be transformed. As a new, single mum I really needed some family support and the Housing Managers at Home Group went above and beyond to help me. My mum was a Home Group customer in a different area but the team worked hard to get her a flat in the development too. Now she’s so close and can pop by for a cup of milk whenever she wants. When I first saw the development, I wondered who the lucky people would be to get the flats with the fabulous huge window and my mum got one!”
