The West End Medical Practice is situated within the grounds of the Category A listed St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh’s West End Conservation Area. Constructed on the grounds of its predecessor, the facility comprises full GP facilities, accommodation for the cathedral stone masons, and a new extension resolving the connection between the historic Song School and the Walpole Hall.
Conceived as a ‘garden pavilion’ the south facing building form to echoes the existing building typology from the local area whilst, to the west, a stepped profile is adopted to align with the existing Cathedral Close grouping of buildings, housing the treatment rooms and support accommodation, including the stonemasons yard.
This form, the use of stone and zinc, combined with surrounding landscaping and single storey sedum roof, embed the project within the cathedral grounds – a play on the theme of physical and spiritual health.
