Building Futures

BELL STREET, GLASGOW

Bell Street is a former B-listed, Victorian stable block that was once used to house horses working to pull the Glasgow City Council Cleansing Department’s refuse collection carts.

Located on a prominent position within the Marchant City area in the city centre, the building was converted by CCG on behalf of Glasgow Housing Association (GHA), now known as Wheatley Homes Glasgow, and Lowther, members of the Wheatley Group, over a 2-year construction programme.

A total of 52 one and two-bedroom mid-market rent flats were conceived as part of a client and Glasgow City Council brief that stated the requirement to conserve as much of the building’s heritage as possible. This included the exterior and the repair and upgrade of the stone elevation, comprehensive repairs to the roof and the improvements to the internal fabric.

The building’s exterior shields a large, enclosed courtyard that is accessible from Bell Street; an arrangement, including the traditional gates, that was retained to allow access for utilities and residents that also includes clever design features such as the retention of slate that was used to create cobbles as a nod to the Victorian heritage of the site.

This theme carries on throughout the building with the retention of an original stair core that once led horses as far up as the top floor which is now a stunning design feature. Exposed brick and sculpted Classical pillars were also conserved within selected dwellings.

CCG manufactured all of the internal and flat entrance doors seen in development including the FD30 timber internal door sets as well as FD60 timber flat entrance doors which are fully accredited to have a 60-minute fire rating.

The flat entrance doors were supplied with a bespoke beading finish to the external facing side of the door leaf, a design that replicates the aesthetic of a traditional Victorian door style

As a direct result of CCG’s involvement in the project, a series of community benefit initiatives were delivered including five full-time jobs, three trade apprenticeships and five work placements. Curriculum support for pupils and lecturers of Glasgow Kelvin College was also provided as well as the donation of materials and labour toward the re-painting of a local care home.
