NORTH GATE, GLASGOW

North Gate is a landmark development for the southside of Glasgow and the transformation of the Gorbals.

Located on the corner of Crown Street just off Laurieston Road, North Gate is the culmination of the 30-year Crown Street Regeneration and typifies the transition the Gorbals/ New Gorbals has undertaken since the mid-20th century where post-war housing has been replaced by contemporary and high-quality alternatives.

The development itself was delivered on behalf of New Gorbals Housing Association and designed by Page\Park Architects with 31, one and two-bedroom flats for social rent conceived within a uniquely-designed block reaching up to 7 storeys designed to appear as a series of ‘towers’ that act as a gateway to the south.

Designed to suit the needs of primarily older residents, the internal layouts are open-plan and are all either dual or triple-aspect. The largest windows are predominantly established on the North elevation to give the building a clear frontage as seen from the city centre whilst full balconies are embedded into the front elevation to utilise the depth of the façade. The inverted roof structure is also concealed with a continuous parapet wall to hide services and provide a clean and robust finish.

North Gate was constructed traditionally with a structural steel frame integrated with an SFS (Steel Framing System) used for the wall zones. The development is designed to a Gold ‘Hybrid’ standard for sustainability with the sustainability credentials supported further by the use of 72 solar PV panels installed by CCG Group member, Arc-Tech (Scotland).

All internal and common door sets, including fully fire-rated and certified FD60 flat entrance doors, were manufactured by CCG with further divisional integration provided in the form of Multi-Utility services from Arc-Tech MU.

CCG was also able to create two full-time job roles and support existing trade apprenticeships as part of the development as well as sustaining engagement with local schools for the duration of the construction programme.

North Gate was officially completed in summer 2022.
