SPRINGFIELD CROSS, DALMARNOCK

Springfield Cross is Glasgow’s largest Passivhaus-certified development and is a new landmark for the city’s East End.

Located on the corner of London Road and Springfield Road, adjacent to the Athletes’ Village, the development comprises 36 one and two-bedroom flats and was led by CCG on behalf of West of Scotland Housing Association and hub West Scotland.

In achieving ‘Passivhaus‘ certification, the building envelope of the flatted block is incredibly enhanced in order to deliver vastly improved levels of airtightness which in turn, drastically lowers heat loss. Residents will require very little heating to power their homes which will deliver significant annualised savings on their energy bills.

CCG’s ‘iQ’ Timber System is being utilised for the wall zones which are designed to have greter depth than a standard wall zone. The System is then integrated with low U Value, triple-glazed PVCu windows and enhanced door sets (also manufactured by CCG).

To further reduce heat loss, insulation is also installed underfloor and in the ceiling of each plot ensuring that each home is entirely thermal bridge free (with the exception of unavoidable thermal bridges or cold zones). Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) is also installed in order to promote clean airflow and maintain comfortable levels of airtightness and airflow.

The combination of such measures delivers an annual space heating demand of ≤ 15 kWh/(m2a) or heating load ≤ 10 W/m2 and no fabric U-values no greater than 0.15 W/(m2K). Overall, a ‘Passive house’ at Springfield Cross will have a minimum 25% betterment in heat loss when compared to the Section 7 ‘Gold’ building standard, otherwise known as the ‘Glasgow Standard’.

CCG achieved practical completion in late-2022.
